If I understand you correctly you are saying the reason for his
caution is that because of lingering racism, Obama is not likely to
get much slack even for minor mis-steps? The burden of being the First
Black Anything?
Can you develop this in a bit more detail?

I'd say that O adopted a very non-confrontational approach largely because he
knew that an aggressive Black person couldn't win a vote in a white majority
population, yes. However, I am not really thinking that avoiding racism is a
basis for doing "gentleness" now. Afterall, he's not running in an election
now. Although, I think there are more potential violent extremists who might
try to assassinate him than any other President. Nonetheless, he has to go for
the gusto now, and hope that the Secret Service ,or other secret police
agencies aren't in any plot against him.
I think he is realistically measuring the level of support he needs to make
changes, and that includes bringing in many liberals and centrists, persuading
them to follow him to the left of their long standing political locations.
