In my ultra-liberal neck of the woods, even with no charter schools there is
still some scope to choose among public schools. We've taken advantage
of it ourselves. So you can still get a malignant type of sorting.

So I'm of two minds about charters. Purely in terms of evidence, by the
way, there isn't much to support them, but as the don in Goodfellas says,
"why take chances?" Though really good evidence either way IMO is hard
to come by.

My original remark, it hardly needs to be said except for certain dunces,
did not knock charter schools. I was imprecise, however, since in important
respects charter schools are public schools.

Those with some combination of money, initiative and good luck can benefit
from (good) charters, but it's no way to run a railroad. D.C. has had
crappy charter
schools whose collapse has screwed the kids unlucky enough to have gone
through them. You could say they were screwed to begin with, but as I said
it's no way to run a school system.
