> Witness the  facts of the eradication of superstition and prejudice in the
> Soviet Union.<

There was an article in SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN awhile back about the
re-emergence of superstition (on a mass scale) when the old Soviet
Union keeled over and died. At first it looks as if the USSR's CP and
its educational system were working hard against superstition so that
when they stopped working it surged back. But the evidence suggests
instead that (1) the end of prejudice under the USSR was only
superficial in the first place; and (2) the popularly perceived use of
science to legitimize the system led to science losing its legitimacy
among the people, so that once the old system fell apart, a lot of
people rejected science and embraced superstition.
