Judis was a member of NAM from about 1973-78 and on the National Steering Committee in 1974-75. Influenced by Weinstein's The Decline of Socialism in America, he was more electorally oriented than other NAM'ers. He may have at one time been loosely affiliated with O'Connor (there was the California Left connection--he attended Berkeley and was a member after O'Connor of the Socialist Revolution journal collective). But he was never into Mao. By the late 1970s, as JD correctly notes, he drifted rightward, though now, he seems to be the only one on the New Republic introducing material read in left study groups of 40 years ago.

Younger, at least. I don't know if he was ever into Mao.

I don't remember Judis being a known associate (as it were) of
O'Connor, though I could easily be wrong. He was a good friend of
James Weinstein and had a regular column in Weinstein's then-weekly
newspaper, IN THESE TIMES. When I read that paper, back in the 1970s,
one could see Judis slowly shifting to the right.

Yup. As I recall, it was some sort of collective or study group or
something.

And, when you call Jim O'Connor part of a gang. . .you mean what?
A group of like-minded thinkers. I certainly don't mean to disparage
O'Connor, who's a great man.
