Influenced by Weinstein's The Decline of Socialism in America, he was more electorally oriented than other NAM'ers. He may have at one time been loosely affiliated with O'Connor (there was the California Left connection--he attended Berkeley and was a member after O'Connor of the Socialist Revolution journal collective). But he was never into Mao.
I just remembered that I was thinking of Robert Leiken, who was beating the war drums against Nicaragua around the same time that Judis was.
