Ok. The defining line between left and right is xenophobia/racism, internationalism/nationalism.
It is much more complex than this. We had a guy named Sol Dollinger on Marxmail who was the author of "Not Automatic". He favored closing the borders on a confused, economistic basis influenced by his decades of experience in the UAW. But on all other questions, he was quite revolutionary.
The AFL was definitely right-wing politically, however. The CIO, of course, not. When they merged, it was an indicator that the 1930s legacy of the CIO had ended.
Being for open borders in and of itself does not make you "left". Jack Kemp favored open borders but he was a total reactionary.
In terms of the European political scene, people like Fortuyn demagogically employ "enlightenment" values but they are making common cause with the BNP, Le Pen et al.
If you are looking for neat classifications, however, I would stick to biology rather than politics even if a platypus is enough to make one dizzy.
