Whatever else socialism is/will be/should be, it must involve humanity
taking control of its own history. It is really weird that anyone should
propose that we, in the midst of capitalisst horror, should have the
immense (and actually totalitarian) fantasy that we can impose on that
future humanity the strait jacket they will wear. And of course it is
also quite fatuous to believe that any revolutionary movement would give
a hoot in hell as to any such Plan from the past.

Finally, no one has ever become a socialist through the attraction of
socialism. (Those who claim to have done so are not soicalists but
academics sitting on the sidelines. "Socialist" MEANS political
activist.) One moves into resistance to the present, and in developing
that resistance one discovers that capitalism must go. The conditions
under which any such movement will operate (none exists now) are as
unpredictable as are the conditions following the achievement of power
by such a movmeent.

Only the totalitarian imagination would dream of imposign marching
orders on that Future.
