>From anthropologist Jeff Maskovsky. . . . Dear All,
As you know, in October there was a front-page article in the New York Times on the Comeback of the "Culture of Poverty," based on a special issue of the august ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, under the title "Reconsidering Culture and Poverty." My colleague Stephen Steinberg has written a rejoinder that has just been posted on website of the Boston Review. Here is the link: http://www.bostonreview.net/BR36.1/steinberg.php Note that the Annals was published with much fanfare, including a Congressional briefing, clips on You Tube, and a widely disseminated brochure, all culminating with Patricia Cohen's piece in the New York Times (the machinery of hegemony). Inspired as I am by Wikileaks, it would be great if you could disseminate the Boston Review piece to your minions. If the spirit grabs you, you can also weigh in on the commentary on the Boston Review website.
