And you have a point, Ted.

However, I'd argue that my shoe manufacturing is not as bad as hunting
in the morning, fishing in the afternoon, herding cattle in the
evening (!!!), and being a critic after dinner. :-)

I didn't really describe the shoe factory or the organization of
labor, but here is what I had in mind but left unsaid:

The factory will be an incredible fun workplace with all sorts of
amenities, safe, well lighted, technically and socially functional,
and all that; half a factory/office, half a park, half a pub, half a
school, and half a Caribbean resort. Wait, how many halves do I have
left? Oh, in turn, schools will be half workplaces, half pubs, half
parks, half Caribbean resorts, and half Tibetan temples.

Every process in this workplace will be highly energy efficient, the
power sources will be of course renewables. Food will be all
super-organic. The people more into it will only "work" for 3-4
hours/day, 3-4 days/week, 3 weeks/month, and at most 9 months/year.
And people will not be attached to their jobs beyond their own
personal inclinations. The organization of labor will be as flat as
possible, enabled by ubiquitous computing/networking technologies.

The cutting of leather (and it'll be called "leather" out of habit,
because in fact it'll be a pretty sturdy 99.9% recycled fiber, since
by then a version of Hinduism will have spread to the entire globe
making all cows and an expanding set of other animals sacred), the
gluing of soles (again, "soles" for lack of a better term), and all
that will be made by workers using largely automated labor
instruments.

In spite of all that, people will still spend their time making shoes,
and they would want to economize their time, and get the shoes right
in quantity and quality.

(Disclaimer: If anything above is suggestive of exploitation, social
alienation, hierarchy, or individuals who are only partially developed
in their talents, needs, and aspirations, please correct as
necessary.)
