Why is the faculty so supportive. I assume that the school is mostly conservative, but the reaction seems to be unaminous.

His post on his website includes only the pro-Sullivan portion of the brutal satire by Upton Sinclair and leaves out the portion that makes clear how Presidents behave. Sullivan, as the Reclaim UC website makes clear, is a protege of Mark Yudof and the very "corporate" RCM management model. UVA is a battle ground between two business models not some utopian academic vision against some greedy Wall Street villains. Genuine progressives do not have a dog in that fight. They should support more democratic governance including faculty and staff representatives on Boards of Trustees. Now, in the wake of the victory of the lesser evil, University Presidents will have gained in strength and the oversight that could be provided by serious boards will be damaged. We owe that to the clumsiness of the UVA BOV and the campaign joined in by too many on the left to restore Sullivan. We are thus no closer to resolving the problems posed to universities by the twin challenges of a fiscal crisis and technological change.
