I don't disagree with any of this. And I am all for downplaying moralizing. You just can't get rid of it entirely and still have a coherent political philosophy (which is I think something you agree with).
I have tried but failed to understand Carroll's position on this. Oh well. -raghu. ^^^^ CB: Yes, I agree. I sent the original post which is the thread heading (from a facebook meme). I'm in favor of atheists and non-religious people having empathy which is, in my opinion, correctly characterized as the core of morality. So, I'm for universal ability to empathize with others or morality. I think M and E "downplay" morality specifically as the underpinning of the Marxist project, but otherwise, in raising children for example, I don't think they oppose establishing universal ability to empathize. In fact ,as I said, for Marx and Engels themselves, who were not members of the working class, their whole life project of supporting the working class members self-interests is morally based , by my logic. So, for non-working class Marxists, we should be honest that empathizing or moralizing does underpin our Marxism. I admitted that to myself a long time ago. The other little piece is that they are warning that we can't rely on the morality of most capitalists as a basis for ending capitalism. So, I agree with you. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
