I like Alex Taborrak. In fact, I just recommended him to my publisher for blurbing my new book five minutes ago. He refers to Tim Leonard who has pushed the idea that the progressives were supporters of eugenics. Indeed, many of them were (Keynes included), but so were conservatives.
Much of the New Deal legislation was written in such a way to exclude Blacks, but the purpose was to keep southerners from blocking it. It was shameful, but that does not mean that Roosevelt or the progressives wanted those exclusions. ________________________________________ From: [email protected] [[email protected]] On Behalf Of David Shemano [[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 11, 2013 12:38 PM To: Progressive Economics Subject: Re: [Pen-l] Keynesians Raghu writes: “This is nonsense. Minimum wage and safety net policies were implemented with the stated goal of providing aid to low-income people. These policies may, as an inevitable side-effect discourage the employment of human beings, but to suggest that this is the intended purpose of progressive public policies is ridiculous.” You may not want to accept it, but the original purpose of minimum wage laws, as explicitly advocated by your progressive predecessors, was to remove low-skilled workers from the workplace, especially women and blacks, to remove competition from white males. This was related to the progressives’ eugenic concerns, which was stuffed into the black hole of progressive history. http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2005/10/the_secret_hist.html.
