Governor Brown and Speaker of the Assembly John A. Perez are Ex Officio members of the University of California Board of Regents. They both attended a meeting of the Regents this week. There are 16 appointed regents plus 7 Ex Officio members.
Both Brown and Peres spoke of the high salaries being paid to numerous UC administrators and suggested that there might be future opposition from the Capital if the numbers of administrators and their salaries continued as they have. There was aggressive and forceful denounciation of these views from the Chair of the Regents, Sherry Lansing, formerly CEO of Paramount Pictures and especially from Richard Blum reputed to be a millionaire or billionaire and husband of a working wife, Senator Diane Feinstein. Lansing and Blum were ready for Brown bringing up the issue. Both invoked the idea that you have to pay for talented people. Blum said he didn't want to use the word "socialism" to characterize the Governor's ideas. Of course he needed to use the word socialism to point out that he didn't want to use the word socialism. In related news: The President of the University of California announced his pending retirement, upon completion of five years employment in August, after which he'll draw $230,0000/year. He'll get the bulk of his retirement pay from previous employers, the U. of Texas and the U. of Minnesota. He has done nice work, according to Blum and Lansing. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
