I'm no expert on Venezuela, but my understanding is that Chavez was a major force for democracy in that country. And I don't mean in the usual sense of fighting for Venezuela against US dictatorial efforts to control that country. While Hugo was trying to involve the "grass roots" in the revolution (politically, not just in terms of material benefits), many of his followers (in his political party, etc.) have been promoting their own careers. With him gone, these opportunists may be unleashed.
