How I wish we could rid ourselves of this vulgar notion: as if one
could boil somebody down to a 'progressive overall' rating.

On a scale of one to ten, estimate the progressivity average
of the following. You may extend the estimate to three decimal
places, but no farther.

1) Genghiz Khan
2) Vlad the Impaler
3) Maria Theresa
4) Benedict of Nursia
5) Prince Gautama
6) Pontius Pilate
7) Blackbeard the Pirate
8) Henry VIII (of England)
9) Leon Czolgosz
10) Mad King Ludwig (of Bavaria)

You lose a lot of information when you reduce a vector to a scalar.

'I don't want to know about it; I don't choose to discuss it;
I don't admit it!' Mr Podsnap had even acquired a peculiar
flourish of his right arm in often clearing the world of its
most difficult problems, by sweeping them behind him (and
consequently sheer away) with those words and a flushed face.
