Let's start with an outline of what Social Security is: is it a form
of insurance (against an event that is close to 100% likely for most
people)? Is it a straight redistribution program? Both? What is it,
really and how to best explain what it is to the lay person? Why is
it important? Why should we care?
It's a pension program, it isn't broken, it's popular, privatization doesn't
provide security (imagine if your private account like alot of 401k's was
heavy into Enron just before it collapsed), Bush's current plan will see
retirement benefits fall by hundreds of dollars each month, Bush's plan
takes money from the Trust fund and doesn't fully pay it back, public
resources would be moved into risky private investment hastening the
collapse of the Trust fund, current retirees would risk losing future
benefits as a result. Public funds are safer than private individual
accounts
SS needs to be expanded to prevent senior poverty. Gutting it won't fix this
problem.
Why should we care? People work all their lives and they should be able to
retire and not have to worry about their financial security or their living.
They should not become an economic burden to their families nor have to
depend on state reosurces allocated for poverty programs. They should be
healthy and secure. Eating cat food to get by ain't no damn joke!
