as I understand the TIVO, it's more like a PC without a monitor _plus_ a network connection via a phone line to TIVO HQ that allows you to do programming. Without the latter, it's pretty useless.
(Our TIVO was defective and when they sent us a replacement, it got stolen. But it can't be used without registering on-line. The TIVO folks said they'd catch the perps if they tried to use it.) BTW, the TIVO's operating system is LINUX. If you want a cheaper TIVO, there are non-brand DVRs, often available through cable services.
