>Senator Bronson Cutting of New Mexico, ... wrote years later: "The
nationalization of banks by President Roosevelt could have been
accomplished without a word of protest. It [not doing so] was
President Roosevelt's great mistake."<

was there a political groundswell for such a policy at the time,
outside of the left (which was pretty weak in 1933)?

only 'groundswell' that fdr would have seen/felt early on was
push by chase bank officials who had supported him for prez
to separate investment from commercial banking, by splitting
two functions, these rockefeller elites - who had been among
very few bankers backing fdr in '32 - intended to bring morgan
finance hegemony, which was based on their unity, to an end,
their lobby efforts led to glass-steagall act... michael hoover
