I thought that the antiabortion question would bring out the right wing and the Democrats would have trouble with turnout. My connection with the Democratic hierarchy expressed confidence before, but I wasn't that certain. Schwarzenegger could have easily governed as a "moderate Republican" if that's not an oxymoron, but he chose to behave increasingly as a member of the hard right, finally appealing to the worst of the worst, possibly in desperation.
