HOUSEHOLD items provider Singer (M) Sdn Bhd plans to boost its presence in
KelantanÂ’s rural areas as it commands good market share there, especially for
its sewing machines.
State regional manager Sharissudin Mokhtar said the majority of KelantanÂ’s 340
consumer agents were based in such areas, as sales had been picking up steadily
there in the past two years.
He said rural villagers had attained a higher income disposal level, thanks to
the relocation of many enterprises to such areas and growth in the agriculture
sector.
With the staple income growing based on the nationÂ’s demand for food produce,
rural areas had become a niche market which Singer had the potential to tap
further, he added.
Sharissudin said this after witnessing the flagging off of a National Day
convoy comprising 60 rickshaws and Vespa motorcycles. The convoy was on a
nationwide tour of the country to coincide with the month-long National Day
celebrations.
Singer has trained 30 agents based in rural areas to offer a sales outlet and
after-sales services.
Sharissudin said emphasis would be given to such agents to ensure that the
rural community was aware of SingerÂ’s latest products, like the computerised
sewing machine, which can produce 320 design patterns.
Besides sewing machines, the company has also recorded an increase in sales of
motorcycles and big screen television sets in such areas.
Among the rural areas identified as growth potential are Jeli, Tanah Merah,
Kuala Krai and Tumpat.//Thestar 23 Ogos
