Umno wants RM5bil for Kelantan under 9th Plan
KOTA BARU: Kelantan Umno has been lobbying for an RM3bil to RM5bil allocation
from the Federal Government under the Ninth Malaysia Plan to ensure that
Kelantan does not lag behind other states.
Claiming that Kelantans economy was 30 years behind, state Umno liaison
committee chairman Datuk Annuar Musa said it needed a big injection of federal
capital.
All Umno leaders have been lobbying and I think we have the attention of Prime
Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on the need for a huge sum, he told
a press conference here on Saturday.
Annuar said Kelantans current economy was based on an outdated model, noting
that raising local government taxes and expediting logging would not make the
state developed.
Under the Eighth Malaysia Plan, he said, the state only received around
RM300mil.
This is inadequate as the state requires a huge sum just to spent on its
operational budget so there is little left to invest in projects which can
generate growth, Annuar said.
He said the PAS state government might have its own projections under the 9th
Plan but Kelantan Umno wanted a huge allocation to speed up growth.
Annuar earlier attended the launching of a state women development advisory
panel by the Raja Perempuan of Kelantan.
Describing the event as historic, Annuar said the Raja Perempuan had inspired
the people to ensure that the welfare of women in Kelantan was not neglected.
She has advised us and I think all Kelantanese will be motivated to help women
here obtain gender equality, he added.//Thestar 5 Sept
