Pay for water, folks urged
STATE water concessionaire Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd wants consumers in Kota Baru to promptly settle their arrears amounting to RM10.8mil.
Its consumer and corporate affairs manager Nik Raihan Nik Abd Rahman said the company was appealing to consumers to settle their debts during the Ramadan month.
We want them to realise that, during this pious period, besides fasting, it is honourable to perform good deeds and settling of debts is one of them, Nik Raihan said in an interview.
He said that Air Kelantan had instructed its counters to be open during the lunch period to enable consumers to make payments.
Air Kelantan senior acting manager (operations and maintenance) Mohd Ashri Awang said that consumers tended to accumulate water bills and pay once in four months, and sometimes totally neglected making payment.
Of the RM10.8mil, RM8.8mil was owed by domestic consumers in 766,820 households with piped water service.
Mohd Ashri said that Air Kelantan had launched an awareness campaign with the use of banners and notices while its enforcement unit was going from house to house to explain the need to settle bills.
We will be flexible. For those with large outstanding amounts, we will allow them to pay according to their capabilities, but at the very least, they should pay, Mohd Ashri said.
Cutting of water supply would be the last resort, he added. //Thestar 18 Oct
