Muslims Not Allowed To Patronise Restaurants Which Sell Liquor

KOTA BAHARU, July 12 (Bernama) -- The Kota Baharu Municipal Council
(MPKB) has enforced the regulation prohibiting Muslims from
patronising Chinese restaurants selling liquor and beer in Kelantan.

MPKB secretary Nazran Mohamad said the directive, which went into
force immediately, was in line with the state government's aspiration
to eliminate liquor consumption among Muslims.

"The regulation was introduced a long time ago but it had been
ignored. However, the directive does not affect all Chinese
restaurants but only those which sell beer and liquor," he told
reporters at his office here today after a meeting with the affected
restaurant operators.

A directive to this effect has been issued by the Kota Baharu
Municipal Council (MPKB) to restaurant operators with permits to sell
beer and liquor to

There are 25 restaurants in the town area which have been given
special licence to sell beer while those selling liquor have to
obtain licence from the Customs Department.

"Owners of the restaurants are required to put up notices at the
entrance of their premises to inform Muslims that they are not
allowed to patronise the place," said Nazran.
