Report card's days are numbered
By C.A. ZULKIFLE
KOTA BARU: The days of fiddling with report cards and faking parents'
signatures will end soon for students in Kelantan.
This is part of the information technology (IT) advancement under
which the state will introduce the nation's first-ever teacher-
student online application, called "E-Guru".
E-Guru will be one of the applications in the state Education
Department's official portal to be launched on Thursday.
All examination results will be posted, so the academic history of
each student can be tracked and analysed.
"It will become an online medium where parents and students can
access examination results, and children
can no longer cheat on their report cards.
"It can also allow parents to monitor truancy as most of the
students' activities will be online," state economic planning unit
(IT) assistant director Tuan Saharizan Tuan Hamzah said.
He said all primary and secondary schools would be linked through the
portal and could interact online 24 hours daily, with chat rooms for
parents to communicate with teachers.
"Parents can view and download examination results, and analyse them
jointly with teachers to identify weaknesses in certain subjects and
decide on how to improve their children's academic performance," he
added.
The state education authorities were stilling mulling over whether to
sell the software that would enable parents to access the portal or
distribute it for free.
The portal will be launched by Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik
Mat as part of the three-day state science and IT carnival on at
Balai Islam in Lundang from Thursday.
Saharizan said Kelantan was at the bottom of the IT-literacy averages
in the country and planned to improve its standing through the
carnival.//Thestar 18 July
