Other races join tanglung festival in Kelantan

PASIR MAS: For many folk in this Kelantan town, the tanglung festival was something unheard of. So when villagers heard the singing and clapping on the grounds of the Chinese temple here on Friday, they decided to check it out. 
 
Many liked what they saw and joined in the fun. Though they were initially sceptical they accepted the invitation of the Wanita Gerakan organisers to have some drinks and to witness the “lantern” parade and mini-concert.

For office workers Suria Yusof, 22, and Syima Sidek, 18, it was a unique experience seeing the tanglung celebrations of the first time. 
 
“We overheard singing so we decided to come and see. It is something new for us to experience,” said Syima.  
 
Enchanted by the lanterns glowing in the dark, the two also decided to see how it was designed and picked up tips on how to ensure the candle continued to glow despite the wind. 
 
The organisers explained the significance of the event to guests who included Malays, Malaysians of Thai descent and Indians who lived nearby. 
Local artistes entertained with Mandarin, Thai and Malay songs. 
 
Villager Yahya Che Hussin, 48, who came on his motorcycle, said the presence of various races was a testament to the multi-ethnicity of the country. 
 
Ooi Guan Im, 48, whose friends grabbed the top prizes in the best-designed lantern contest, said he was glad to share his lantern-making skills with the non-Chinese. 
 
Lawyer Ravi Suppiah, 50, whose wife Jayanthi Devi Balaguru is the Gerakan Wanita Legal Aid bureau chairman, said the event demonstrates our cultural melting pot and underlines a commitment to maintain a peaceful and tolerant society. //Thestar
