Kelantan to take muay nationwide
KOTA BARU: Buoyed by support from the Kelantan Government, a local
kickboxing promoter wants to take the sport nationwide.
MI Group Entertainment Sdn Bhd chairman Marzuki Ismail said he would
talk to the National Sports Council and Tourism Malaysia to promote
kickboxing fights as a tourism draw for Visit Malaysia Year 2007.
He said the sport, also known as muay, could give wayward youths a
platform to channel their frustrations by sparring with each other in
the ring.
Mat Rempit, he added, could be persuaded to take up the sport
as "this is better than racing illegally on the streets."
"Besides that, the training regimen can instil a fitness culture
among its exponents and encourage those in the audience to keep fit,"
he said.
The company plans to hold roadshows in every state although
kickboxing is mostly popular as a community sport in Perlis, Kedah,
Terengganu and Kelantan.
According to many residents here, kickboxing is bigger than even
football as a spectator sport.
Marzuki said the participants selected for the roadshows would
comprise champions from the ongoing circuit in Kelantan.
The fights will be termed Malaysian Freestyle (Full Contact)
Kickboxing.
Recently, the state government allowed open fights throughout the
state with conditions imposed by the Kelantan Boksing Association.
Open fights had been banned from 1995 owing to concerns that they
were un-Islamic, too violent and led to gambling.//Thestar 1 Nov
