:-) Rather that your hands might be tied when certain things are beyond
your control.  Callouts to non-reentrant libraries, for instance, did not
seem to be protected by your scheme.

But perhaps the necessary precautions already exist in the core by virtue
of 5.005 threads?

Wow, that sounds ambitious considering Jarkko wants 5.8.0 this summer.  
Would not 5.8.0 obviate 5.6.x?
