I just had initial success in building Perl 5.8.6 on z/OS 1.4. I just finished yesterday performing the make, make test, and make install. I am installing it as a prereq for MySQL. It took multiple attempts to get the make to work. I could not use the z/OS supplied make. I installed make 3.76 to get past some problems. I had to ensure that ulimit was set to unlimited. I also had to reply "none" for the install paths for man or html files. I am not sure whether I am out of the woods on all of the problems though. When I execute the make test it takes a minute or two making files static:
AutoSplitting perl library
Making Encode::Symbol (static)
Making Encode::TW (static)
Making Encode::Unicode (static) ...etc.
Is that normal? I do not know.

I'd like to install perl on a z/OS 1.4 system, but most of the traffic on

1) If I get the latest version from CPAN, am I likely to be able to get it
to build to a point I can run programs under it, even if I can't get things
like IP sockets working? Is there a previous version (a 5.6 for example)
that would be better?
2) Is there a site (other than this list) with practical advice on setting
up and using perl in a z/OS environment, from people practically using it?
(Should someone set one up if not?) Or is the README.OS390 file sufficient?
