The cure seems worse than the disease at this point in time then. Maybe the heuristic in CPAN.pm could be just a little more robust? I’m not sure what that would entail, of course; what *did* distributions of the time look like? There have to be more cues in there than *just* the absence of a Makefile.PL, I hope?
