i do agree. yes, it is no question witch of the two is more powerful,
multipurpose and so on. but in all your lines i read aversion against php
in general. just count the number of programmers switching over from php to
perl because first steps in php were so much easier. i was an so where some
friends of mine.

imagine thee was no php. think of the tide of programmers trying to do some
simple form parsing. all channels on any irc servers refuse to help when it
comes to cgi questions and the channels we are sent to usually host only
ourselfs. its a painful thing to have to rely on perl sometimes. i do love
perls array functions and control structures, but they only make things
less painfull i know already. the dbi module i referred to and others may
be fun for perl pro's, for me its painful. the great disappointment lies in
the ammount of learning and bookreading that has to be done because
learning by dong in perl - forget it. just stop comparing only functional
power, start to match user friendliness and functionality against
requirements in mainstream web developement and you will find a few good
aspects in php making it worth looking at.

so, still i can't share your point. for things like sockets and form
parsing i will rely on php in future - or until i understood the referring
perl functions and found them easier. i'ld like to get behind all those
perl secrets and gain more expirience in everyday perl tasks but there is
still a painful march ahead.

btw you mentioned that some db-stuff will change in a year - i guess php is
well maintained and workarounds will be available, for php3 is found in too
many db web projects.
