You might have a look at Tangram (http://www.tangram-persistence.org/),
which is a set of Perl modules which implements object persistence in
relational databases.  However, it looks to be very complicated too.
However once you've learned the basics it should make database programming
much easier and much more error-free.  One of those cases of where it gets
harder before it gets easier.
