1) In order to give you a better idea of how these logos would look in practice, I made a few sample icons based on my 3 favourite logos: http://pdl.perl.org/images/pdl-icons-demo.png Here you can see icons for download, help, documentation, new release, and support. 2) Clifford Sobchuk has put together a proposal. A camel inside a Möbius band: http://pdl.perl.org/images/cliff-pdl-logo.png It could use some tweaking, but you get the idea. I think the idea is promising.
