I don't want to be ungrateful... but these seem a bit over-complicated? They 
even talk about Karma which is way past it's use by date.

poppler? xpdf? what is all this stuff?

Why not just say

I am not kidding, I lift that right out of my old notes on 'Building SciKarl' 
and it works just fine (once all the pre-requisities are in place, but they are 
not PDL).

Sorry but I think it makes building PDL on a Mac seem a lot harder than it 
really is. Perhaps this stuff can be moved to an 'advanced frills' wiki page?
