It does not require X or CygWin. I run it on Windows (XP and Vista) as well as
Linux. It does require FreeGlut for PGPlot. Using either the CPAN install or
the UWinnipeg repository install (with the ActiveState ppm disabled). It is
faster than most other options I have tried. The PDL2 console boots very
quickly and allows easy import and manipulation of data.

The above is an unsubstantiated piece of allegation that is not worth the time
composing a response.

PDL works fine on my MacBook without X on it. Well, I do have X, but I don't
use it at all, and I have compiled PDL without X (because my version of X is
really old). PDL also works fine (actually better) on my Xserve which certainly
doesn't have X on it.

PDL is available on every major platform, although I have personally used it
only on Macs. I believe it requires Cygwin to run on Windows. All the gory
details are on the PDL web site.
