In a media conference at the Indonesian Christian University here Monday, the leaders of at least eight major student groups in Jakarta pledged they would only stop raising their demands when a "New Indonesia" is established. The groups also intend to restate their demands for a transitional government to replace the Habibie government, the abolition of the military's role in politics and the trial of former president Suharto. "Essentially, we are demanding a new government and a new system," Mohammad Sofyan from the Committee of Students and People for Democracy was quoted by the Post as saying. The students also planned to encourage the general public to join their street protests. According to the leaders, they want Habibie to step down to give way to a transitional government which would take his place and prepare for a credible government. They said they rejected the scheduled general election promised for June 7 as they believed it would not be carried out freely and fairly. "The main problem is that the current government and legislators were elected under defective laws. How can we expect them to conduct a fair and honest election?" Said Indra of Jakarta Students' Senate Association. However, divisions remained among students groups. Seno, a student at the Institute of Social and Political Science in Jakarta told AFP the majority of student groups, who met at a national library Friday, have agreed to make the general election a success because they believe it is the only realistic option. "We are focusing on how to make the election a success, while trying to minimize the possibility of poll rigging," Seno said. Seno also said the demand for Suharto's trial could wait until a new government is formed after the election. "Suharto should be tried by the new government because we can't rely on the present government to do so," Seno told AFP. On Friday representatives from seven Indonesian student groups met at a national library here to draw up a common strategy. All 300 representatives of the groups at the meeting agreed to push for fair and free polls, the Jakarta Post daily said. But student activist sources have disputed the reported agreement, and said the students, who were in the forefront of the battle to unseat former president Suharto in May, remained divided.
