I was able to build the RPMs ... but after activating the MPM apache does not start anymore because PHP on FC4 seems to be built without thread support and the peruser MPM seems to use multithreading ...

I'm currently building RPMs for fc4. Although I have to use Apache
2.0.54 including redhat patches the build runs through and it looks
quite good. since i screwed up the last build I will try it out tomorrow
;-) i need some sleep :-D
