Dear all

The way we manage this system at the British Museum is to put conditi9onal
formatting on the excel spreadsheet

In effect, we have designated an ‘acceptable’ level for each trap based on the
‘munchabilty’ of the objects in the collections based on the collections risk
rating

As well as showing up a colour change immediately to the person inputting the
data, it is a very easy to look through a large database and see where the
problems are – ie red is a problem

As we move collections around, as well as installing them in permanent and
temporary galleries, we change the risk rating for the new location and also
may adjust the conditional formatting to accommodate this change. As a rule
this is done annually or at the point that the objects start to move.

For example; a store containing stone collections (low munchability) will be
risk rating yellow – low – so the conditional formatting which will change the
colour of the cell will be more than for a store with textiles or organic
collections.

An additional factor to consider is adjacency so a store with low risk objects
(low munchability) may be adjacent to a store with high risk (high
munchability) and the conditional formatting is adjusted to accommodate this as
a precaution to the near-by objects. (particularly Webbing clothes moth)

I’m happy to show anyone more details if you would be interested

Hello Pestlist Group,

I had a question relating to monitoring for pests in museums that I wanted to
toss out on this thread and see if anyone had any opinions. This monitoring
question concerns webbing cloths moths (WCM) specifically.

Basically, the question is how to "interpret and treat" an area where 1 or 2
moths find their way into the trap over the course of a month. Is an area with
1 or 2 moths caught over the course of a month a "problem/infestation"? In
theory, it seems like it indicates the presence of WCM and therefor would be,
but in reality can you really devote time and resources needed to inspect and
deep clean a 30' radius around every trap that snags a lone moth? Are there
certain numbers of moths in traps that are, for lack of a better term,
"realistically acceptable", while other numbers (+5 per month?) that signal "we
need to specifically address this area right away"?

I am curious about how different people view this issue when monitoring. And
how these types of results (1 or 2 moths per month) get communicated to the
institution through the lens of an IPM program that is tracking a WCM presence
in a building.

Thanks,
Todd

This is an excel sheet developed at the Met by Garth Swanson that has some
useful analysis tools built in and basic instructions on each page.

Hi Dawn,

I use Microsoft Access. It's pretty basic, but I would be happy to share our
database with you if you'd like! It should be pretty easy to switch out our
information with your own. At the very least, you could steal the list of
pests, which I compiled using information from this pestlist and
museumpests.net<http://museumpests.net>. Shoot me an e-mail if you're
interested:
