Katherine,

Your observations suggest that there are breached waste lines (or vents serving
those systems) in these spaces. They may be ancient abandoned pipes hidden in
walls, above ceilings or even beneath floors. There may also be a drain that
has gone dry and is unknown to you and your associates. We have these 'eureka!'
moments all the time, and I frequently hear folks who've been in a building for
decades utter 'I never knew that there was a drain hidden there'. Even the
building managers may not know what old systems hide behind plaster walls.

These cockroaches will, indeed, wander about further afield within a building,
but they'll be most numerous near the 'off ramp' they use from their little
Mass Pike of the sanitary system.

Feel free to reach out directly next week to discuss means to discover the
source(s). Once those are located, repairing the systems will return you to
your regularly scheduled programming.

Best,
Rich

Subject: [pestlist] Cockroaches

Good afternoon,

I noticed a substantial uptick in the number of American and Oriental
cockroaches caught in our blunder traps deployed in storage and exhibition
spaces over the last two months and am wondering if this is part of a larger
trend this year or if ours is an isolated case. I’m curious because we’re
finding these cockroaches in spaces that are nowhere near drains or plumbing.
Are they responding to the humid conditions we’ve been experiencing in western
Massachusetts over the last few months, or is there perhaps a larger issue
we’re dealing with?

Thanks for your time and input.

Best,

Katherine Fecteau
