Katherine,

Could be. Do the buildings feed into a common sanitary system? If the plumbing
(or perhaps steam tunnels) connect the buildings, then I would think it is
possible for the roaches to spread from a single source. Alternatively, an
aging sanitary system might be fraying at multiple locations at once.

One thing I’d add to Richard’s post is after repairing the system, you should
thoroughly clean the drains and perhaps have a professional apply an
insecticidal foam product to kill roaches in the drains.

Dear Richard and Dan,

Thank you for your helpful feedback. I should clarify that I’m finding
cockroaches in different buildings scattered across a multi-acre campus. Is my
problem still likely plumbing related?

Thanks again.

Best,

Katherine

Katherine,

Richard is spot on. And if there are any steam tunnels on the property, these
could be highways by which roaches spread from the source of the problem to
other buildings.

Subject: [pestlist] Cockroaches

Good afternoon,

I noticed a substantial uptick in the number of American and Oriental
cockroaches caught in our blunder traps deployed in storage and exhibition
spaces over the last two months and am wondering if this is part of a larger
trend this year or if ours is an isolated case. I’m curious because we’re
finding these cockroaches in spaces that are nowhere near drains or plumbing.
Are they responding to the humid conditions we’ve been experiencing in western
Massachusetts over the last few months, or is there perhaps a larger issue
we’re dealing with?

Thanks for your time and input.

Best,
