Hi Lauren,

Thanks for asking this question. I have always recorded the instances of those
things (exactly like the photo you sent) as cave barklice (Dorpteryx) and
called them “environmental indicators” since, here in the desert, we don’t
expect to see many moisture-loving insects. I’d be interested if anyone has any
more info.

Thanks,
Katy

Dear Tony,

Thanks so much for responding! Unfortunately I didn’t remember to take a photo,
my apologies! I’ve have attached a photo of what I believe I’ve been seeing,
with the small and almost hairy-looking wings. Next I see them I will
definitely take a photo.

Lauren

Lauren -
There are several species of domestic booklice which can be winged or have
abbreviated wings. Have you got a photo, or can you send me a couple of
specimens?

Hello everyone,

I have recently been seeing an uptick in the number of winged booklice (or
perhaps they are more accurately called barklice?) found on our traps across
several locations (Cambridgeshire, England). Some of the sources I have found
say that the winged booklice/barklice are not a threat to collections as they
only live outside and chance their way into collections, and was wondering if
anyone had any experience or thoughts on the matter. My thought is that since
they are also psocids they may be a similar threat as well? We are going to
start recording them separately from wingless booklice in any case to get a
better idea if they are really increasing or if it is just perception. I
generally find them on traps where wingless booklice are also found.

Thank you very much! Best,
