Hi Simon This is one of the bark beetles (Scolytinae) - I would say it is *Hylesinus fraxini* or a close relative. They are usually associated with ash trees ( *Fraxinus*), and tunnel under the bark. When they occur in large numbers indoors, the first thing to inspect is any firewood. It is most likely they are emerging from that. They do not present a threat to the building or its contents, except that dead individuals provide food for *Anthrenus* larvae.
