The only cheap way I know of doing this is to buy servers that
support BIOS serial redirection from the start.

There is a thing called a PC Weasel which does work, but it costs a
lot of money and takes up an ISA/PCI slot.

Without that you either have to buy an expensive IP KVM thing (which
will often make you access it with java applets and other horrors),
or else settle for only seeing the machine from the bootloader
(grub/lilo) onwards.

grub onwards is better than nothing though, and only requires a
serial connection to another computer.
