I am in agreement with Mark. Definitely backup before upgrading. I started off with the alpha versions of Gusty so I did not have to go through the upgrade process. From the Ubuntu forums, it seems that some have no problems upgrading and some have had major problems with upgrading.
If you are really concerned, it might be best to wait a month before upgrading. This will give the developers some time to fix the major bugs that came out of the 7.10 release. I know that today was the first day that updates have been released. If you are using a laptop with Intel audio or an Nvidia card using a dual monitor, you might want to wait. There are some bugs that are preventing them to work (the sound does have a temporary fix though). Those two are the ones that are showing up in the forums as issues.
