That's a fair approach, but it's worth noting that this is one reason why there are 6-monthly updates with Ubuntu, rather than 6-yearly with something like Windows.

As I mentioned before, there are some nice incremental improvements but nothing major, so generally speaking each upgrade should be relatively painless. Waiting a few weeks still means that any problems are likely solved though (either with updates, or with threads in forums telling you how to work around the problem).

It's also worth noting that the software in the distribution isn't generally unique to Ubuntu, so a lot of it is already well tested in other distros.
