character coding current locale (uft-8)
how do i get this to work

I'm not sure what you're opening with gedit but it sounds like a binary file, however in any case none of this should be needed. I'm pretty sure that the stock drivers (or at least the drivers you can download through Ubuntu) should get you where you need to be.

Which Ubuntu version are you using? What's your monitor? (Manufacturer/model)

For some reason support for 1680x1050 is a bit messy; I had to edit my xorg.conf file directly to add support for it.

I've sent a copy of this home to remind me to check the changes I made, which I'll forward here when I have them (but that could be a couple of days).

Do you have a driver CD with the monitor (not the graphics card)? If you do there should be a .inf file on it for the monitor, and I think there are websites that will convert them to xorg.conf entries.

Give us a little more to go on, hopefully we'll get somewhere. I'd advise against experimenting too much with the graphics if you're not sure what you're doing, especially if you're not comfortable at the commandline (which is where you'll end up when you break the graphics config!)
