Another option would be to use DosBOX or even better (if you have the bandwidth) would be to download vmware player that the appropriate vm image (there are versions available for all distro's in all states) including Alpha releases. I personally am tempted to get the new Fedora Alpha.

That way you could try out the latest version whilst still having a working copy. Once the new one tests out OK you could upgrade the main drive. This would have the following advantages: 1. You wouldn't lose the ability to print/etc. while trying to iron out any bugs in the new version. 2. You can keep the new version on a separate drive until you or someone else has ironed out all the bugs. If you always have 1 main install and 1 reserved for checking out upgrades you can repeat this strategy for further versions. Not that I've ever tried this out myself. I'm still building my Linux box. Decided against dual boot at the present time. Linux - Ubuntu - has given me a real run-around over the last few days, and I am only now up and running again after 3 days wrestling with it Ubuntu 8.10 simply refuses to print properly. HP Deskjet 640c so a basic printer there. Firefox would not print at all, and Scribus which I use a lot, started to print half way down the page etc etc. In the end a did a clean install of 8.10 and the result - same chaos!! I almost felt like trying Mint or even SUSE!!! In the end I reinstalled 8.04 and all is now fine and working well. I have lost a lot of time, sweat, some tears, but I now have to rebuild my machine. This is an object lesson in always wanting the brightest and the best!!
