Thanks.  I will have a go when I have time.

One way or the other I will run a VM FIRST before messing up again!!

Mind you there was a silver lining to this cloud.  I was able to install 
only the programs I needed, and I understood a (bit) more of what I was 
doing, so probably made less errors, installed less rubbish and messed 
up less!!
