To reply to all: I haven't checked inodes but can still create directories/files elsewhere in the partition so I don't think that's it.
I have performed a boot time disk check with no errors. The examples I gave with sudo were to emphasise that I was running as root but actually most of the tests I've done have been logged in as root. I'm glad this has got everyone else as stumped as it's got me! Mark
