Thanks Clive. I have taken Martin's advice and ordered a VHS/DVD-RW player (JVC DR-MV5) off eBay, it cost just over £50 and should simplify things quite a lot. I picked up 25 Philips DVD-RW at the same time (£15) (I found the player manual online first to see what I needed). The goal is it set it up with a TV initially and get some tapes converted, but then hopefully get to a point where I can do it without a TV. Discs will be transferred to my PC for archiving so I'm not too concerned about DVD longevity. I may look at transcoding once they're on the PC - video compression has moved on a bit since these players were launched - but we'll see. I do like the idea of setting up a Pi to detect a blank screen and send a remote "stop" but it's not a project I have time for at the moment - it's a shame as I see videos of people doing stuff like that and I'd love to have the time to play (maybe if I spent less time watching videos of other people doing things...) It does lead me to ask: are any of those currently on PLUG into doing those sorts of things? Ie not just writing code but knocking up a simple circuit etc? -- Mark Rogers // More Solutions Ltd (Peterborough Office) // 0344 251 1450 Registered in England (0456 0902) 21 Drakes Mews, Milton Keynes, MK8 0ER -- Peterboro mailing list Peterboro@mailman.lug.org.uk https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/peterboro
