Transcoding sounds a good plan Mark, depending on the output format of your equipment of course.
I use OpenSource Handbrake for this and not only does it give me a 30- 50% diskspace saving on my videos but it uses a more modern format that is more likely to be compatible with today's equipment/software and will likely have more longevity than the format the video is currently using. HandBrake is available for Linux, Mac and Windows. HandBrake can use an installed GPU for acceleration if you have one, otherwise it uses the Intel/AMD GPU. Once setup it can handle a very large workload of videos without intervention. Works well for me. Just take care to get the initial setup correct and check the initial outputs. I set it up to output a ta-da sound when finished. Make sure your cooling is up to scratch as it will stress your PC. Perhaps an excuse for a clean out of dust/fluff first - no bad thing anyway.
